The safety and efficiency of instrument use is a key component to dental practice success. While it is easy to focus on customer retention, growth, and day-to-day management, keeping instruments clean and safe is another aspect of dental practice that should not be overlooked.

In an article from Dental Economics, Mary Govoni writes, “One area of concern is transporting and handling instruments during cleaning and sterilization. Similarly, it is easy to overlook inefficiencies in organizing, cleaning, and sterilizing instruments”.

In this article, Govoni addresses:

  • Safety in instrument handling
  • Options for safe transportation of contaminated instruments
  • Implementing a cassette system in a dental practice.

While day-to-day management and organization of instruments may seem like a hassle, the benefits of properly using and storing these instruments go beyond customer satisfaction. Govoni writes, “Instrument management can be disorganized and labor intensive, or it can be efficient, safe, and economical for dental practices. The key differences are good planning and utilizing instrument cassettes”.
