Day-to-day operations run more smoothly with a cohesive team. No dentist or practice manager wants to have to fire a team member, nor deal with the headache of lost productivity, hiring, and training a new employee. In her recent blog post, “Want to Avoid Firing Team Members? Here are 4 Tips”, dental practice consultant Sally McKenzie shares some advice for keeping your team together.

  • Be very clear in each employee’s job description. Your employees need to know specifically what is expected of them and what role they play in the success of the practice.
  • Provide ongoing training. Employees need to know what’s expected of them, but they also need to be given the skills to perform these tasks. Everyone benefits from properly-trained employees.
  • Give regular feedback. “Don’t wait until there’s a serious situation before you start offering feedback,” McKenzie explains. “This will just lead to frustration for both you and the employee causing the problem. When you see employees doing something good, praise them. When you see them doing something wrong, take them aside and let them know.”
