American Dental Association (ADA) president Gary L. Roberts, DDS, has released a statement regarding a recent ruling by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The ruling specifies certain steps dental practices should take with amalgam waste. Practices will be required to install dental amalgam waste separators, which will prevent it from being released into the sewer system.

Roberts believes the EPA’s rule “represents a fair and reasonable approach to the management of dental amalgam waste.” He adds, “The rule includes reasonable exemptions, a phase-in period and considerations for dental practices that have already installed the devices.”
