A new phishing scam is targeting healthcare providers, says the U.S. Office for Civil Rights (OCR). Recipients receive an email disguised as official OCR audit communication. The American Dental Association shared the details in a recent news release:
“It has come to our attention that a phishing email is being circulated on mock Health and Human Services Departmental letterhead under the signature of OCR’s director, Jocelyn Samuels,” said OCR in the alert. “This email appears to be an official government communication, and targets employees of HIPAA-covered entities and their business associates.” The email contains a link directing the reader to a non-governmental website that is not affiliated with HHS or OCR.
