Last month, we wrote about the need for dentists to invest in disability insurance with a benefit amount that could sustain them.
If you make a claim and it ends up being denied or terminated, it’s very important that you not do anything that will prejudice your claim. Say as little as possible if you speak to a claims consultant, but do take notes about the consultant’s questions. The consultant is definitely documenting the call on their end, and you should be, too. Contact an attorney immediately afterward.
If you receive a letter instead of a phone call, do not call the insurance company right away. Rather, call an attorney before proceeding. The insurance company retains a well-trained legal team dedicated to keeping you from receiving disability benefits. Hiring your own attorney can help level the playing field.
This is when it’s very helpful to have an organized record-keeping system. There will be numerous documents requested over the course of the appeal process.
Of course, don’t go back to work if you are disabled. You could injure one of your patients or exacerbate your own condition. In addition, it can hurt your chances of collecting a disability benefit if your insurance company can prove that you’re well enough to work.
