The HIPAA Violations Your Patients Notice

You and your staff are careful to stay HIPAA compliant. Are there ever slip-ups at your office? Here’s what that looks like to your patient.

When you look around your office, do you see it from your clients’ perspective? There could be some HIPAA violations you don’t even notice. Are your front desk staff speaking quietly to each patient, or shouting across the waiting area about sensitive patient information? Are staff having conversations amongst themselves about patients? Whether these conversations are related to their services or if they’re personal, patients notice these things and it makes them wonder what personal information of theirs is being overheard by others.

Practice management software is such a time-saver and really maximizes the efficiency of your office. Everyone is able to see who’s on the schedule and for what service. When you lead your patients back for their service, they can glance over at the monitor and see names and sometimes services of everyone visiting your office that day. This gives patients an uneasy feeling – that you’re sacrificing their privacy for the convenience of the software. Make sure you adjust the settings so this information is kept private, maybe using just initials or first names only.
