Even the most relaxed patients can be a little anxious before their dental exam. A pleasant chairside manner can alleviate a lot of that and get them through it without issue. What about your patients with severe anxiety? These are the ones with high levels of anxiety on a day-to-day basis, and a dental visit could put them close to a panic attack. While this blog is not meant to advise on mental health treatment, there are things you can do to give your practice a more relaxing atmosphere.
Your waiting area alone can set the tone for the patient’s visit. If you have an anxious patient, do you want this person to be sitting in an uncomfortable, harshly-lit, overly clinical room, fretting about the exam to come? Even your other patients will not feel at ease in this environment. Here are a few changes you can make that provide all your patients a more relaxing atmosphere:
- Colors: a fresh coat of paint can be inexpensive and make a huge difference. Light blue, peach, pastels, and beige are all thought to be soothing colors.
- Lighting: use a combination of table lamps and overhead lighting for your waiting area. Try to use warmer light rather than cooler tones.
- Furniture: comfortable seating and some wooden end tables make this area feel more like home. Instead of rigid, hard plastic chairs, consider couches and chairs with real cushions.
- Decorating: lamps, wall art, and other small embellishments add those personal touches that make the ambience warm and inviting.
