Overhead and Your Dental Practice

In a new video for DentistryIQ, editor Chris Salierno, DDS, discusses the topic of overhead and dental practices. How much overhead is the ideal amount? The simplest definition of overhead is: the cost of doing business. It’s everything the dentist doesn’t put in his or her pocket. General dentists should aim for 60% overhead, says Salierno, and he offers other benchmarks for specialists.

“Looking at overhead, overall, is just one big number,” says Salierno. “That’s good to know, and more dentists should know that, but it’s also important to break that down into the different costs that a dental office has. If your overhead is running high, you want to know where that expense is coming from.”

Overhead shouldn’t be looked at alone or out of context. It’s one figure that should be taken into consideration along with many others. Our CPAs can answer questions you have about overhead and the business aspect of operating your practice. Call us today if we can be of assistance.
