Injectable Treatments and Your Practice

More dental practices are considering the benefits of offering dermal filler injections. These patients are a growing revenue source, and administering these injectables is a quick and easy process. They pay at each visit and there is no insurance to deal with. It’s a win-win, right? In most cases, yes; however, there are patients who are not a good fit for these treatments.

In a recent article, Dentistry Today lists the following reasons you it might be best to say no to some patients:

  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Request for treatment beyond what would appear natural
  • Medical history contraindications
  • Mental health issues/Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Some patients have sought out your practice solely for the purpose of getting these dermal fillers, but the situation can be sticky if you have an existing patient who wants the injectable but isn’t a good candidate. No matter what the case, here are some suggestions offered in the article when you feel it’s your ethical and professional duty to decline:

  • “I understand what you’re looking for, but I don’t think I’m the best one to deliver that for you. Let’s see if we can find an appropriate referral.”
  • “It’s now beyond the 2-week mark. We really need to pause and re-evaluate at the next natural interval for treatment.”
  • “I believe we’ve reached a point where I don’t think there’s anything more I personally can do for you. Perhaps it’s time to find someone who more closely shares your esthetic vision.”
