It’s no secret that you put your heart and soul into your practice. The long hours, the emergencies, the everyday responsibilities of being a business owner. The list goes on. Not that dentistry is without its rewards! The longstanding client relationships, the early screening that saves a patient’s health, the satisfaction of seeing a patient finally show a confident smile for the first time – all of these make it worthwhile. You take care of your patients, your staff, your practice, but what about you? When was the last time you took a vacation?
No one is taking enough vacation nowadays. There are many reasons business owners can be reluctant to do so. There are also many benefits! It’s time to get some fresh air and take a little vacation. Now that that’s settled, how do you make sure the practice functions while you’re away? If you’ve got other dentists in your practice, they should be able to cover for you. If not, you may have other options.
Chris Salierno, DDS, chief editor at Dentistry IQ, suggests bringing in a retired dentist to cover for you. Sometimes they do basic hygiene exams, but they are also available for emergency cases. They may have to work a lighter load than what you would usually schedule for yourself, but this way your office stays running while you’re gone. Salierno has found retired dentists interested in these vacation fill-ins through his local dental society – another benefit to being involved. This might be a resource for you as well. Make sure you plan ahead, and give staff and patients plenty of notice.
