New requirements for dental practices go into effect this year. If your practice does not properly encrypt data, you may be out of compliance, which could result in fines. Unless you have a background in IT, you probably have little to no experience in the area of information encryption. Here are a few key facts to prepare for the changes:

 

 

Encryption

Encryptions are used to keep your private information safe from prying eyes. It creates a key which allows only those who have been given access to the data the ability to read it. It works as much as the codes used to disseminate information during combat work. If you don’t know the right data line, you don’t get to read the data.

HIPAA is Cracking Down

HIPAA has decided that 2016 will be the year to increase the incentive for practices to make patient security their top priority. HIPAA is auditing and with that comes fines as high as $1.5M for non-compliance. At a minimum, practices will be required to maintain an AES encryption.
